In Te Ngahere for the first day back at school we did a STEAM Challenge. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. We were learning to create a freestanding object with limited materials. This STEAM challenge was ‘Who can build the tallest newspaper tower?’ We only had two pieces of newspaper, 30 centimetres of tape and we could not use scissors to cut the paper and tape. What I found hard was ripping the paper and trying not to rip it the wrong way. . Also we had to use small pieces of tape because we only had a little bit. What I think worked well was creating a tower with a wide base for stability. What I think I did well was was talking with my group and helping them if they needed it. What I could maybe do differently next time is think of a different design, maybe a skinny design with a wide bottom. When we measured our towers my group’s tower was 1 meter and nine centimetres. The winning group was Emma and Zhynaliyah‘s with a height of one meter and eighteen centimetres. I can’t wait for the next STEAM challenge. Have you ever done a STEAM challenge before?
Talk to you soon.
Bye.
